Connecting sales analysis with stock availability
Join variant order lines to dated orderability intervals and keep uncertain stock periods visible before comparing sales rates.
Connect sales to stock at the variant and time interval the decision requires. A current balance beside last month’s sales cannot show whether customers could order that variant when those sales occurred.
Build a dated variant record
Choose a stable variant key, sales channel, delivery area and reporting time zone. Collect qualifying order lines with their placement time and units. Beside them, retain dated changes to inventory, fulfilment eligibility, publication state and the continued-selling setting. If only snapshots exist, mark the intervals between them as uncertain.
Shopify’s month-end inventory snapshot includes product variant title and Variant SKU fields. Neither should be assumed to be a permanent cross-system key.
Product-detail changes can split historical sales rows; preserve a dated mapping to the underlying variant where records permit. Distinguish ordered units from a report’s net quantity after reversals.
Use the stock field that fits the question. Shopify’s available quantity excludes committed, unavailable and incoming units. Stock at a location that cannot fulfil the relevant online order is not saleable to that shopper. Continued selling may still allow an order at zero tracked stock.
Build a dated variant record
- Choose a stable variant key, sales channel, delivery area and reporting time zone
- Collect qualifying order lines with placement time and units
- Retain dated changes to inventory and fulfilment eligibility
- Retain dated changes to publication state and the continued-selling setting
- Mark intervals between snapshots as uncertain
- Preserve a dated mapping to the underlying variant where product-detail changes split sales rows
- Distinguish ordered units from a report’s net quantity after reversals
- Use the stock field that fits the question, not the most convenient one
Join orders to availability intervals
Set interval boundaries from inventory, publication, location or selling-rule changes. Assign each order line to the state that applied when the shopper placed the order. When an order itself reduces available stock, use the state before that order for this orderability check. Preserve an unknown state when event order or timing cannot be resolved.
| Interval state | Reading of orders |
|---|---|
| Confirmed orderable | Recorded orders during a known opportunity period. |
| Confirmed blocked | The order count cannot measure demand that could not be placed. |
| Continued selling at zero | Orders may occur; show the stock position and fulfilment promise separately. |
| Uncertain | Retain the orders but exclude the interval from a precise available-time rate. |
Report ordered units and confirmed orderable hours or days together. Treat the rate as descriptive because traffic, price, placement and promotions may differ across intervals.
Interval states and how to read orders
- Confirmed orderable
- Recorded orders during a known opportunity period.
- Confirmed blocked
- The order count cannot measure demand that could not be placed.
- Continued selling at zero
- Orders may occur; show the stock position and fulfilment promise separately.
- Uncertain
- Retain the orders but exclude the interval from a precise available-time rate.
Check the join
Inspect records around a stock change, a restock, a hidden variant and an order routed across locations where those cases occur. Shopify says inventory adjustment default reports can help you learn more about your inventory history. They do not, by themselves, prove what every shopper saw.
Finish with the share of the review period whose orderability is unknown, the qualifying-order rule and any material storefront changes. The joined view supports a stock investigation. It does not identify why shoppers chose to buy or leave.
